I am available for Keynote presentations and panels. I can speak on a variety of topics and tailor my content to the needs of your audience. Descriptions below. Inquire for speaking fees.
This talk serves as a basic overview of science communication. It includes a call with you all so that I can tailor the talk specifically to the needs and interests of your audience. Potential topics include inclusive communication, narrative storytelling, common misconceptions, and working with journalists.
I share my path from academia into journalism/science communication. This includes my early work developing a science communication network for scientists, launching an award-winning science podcast, and my general experience being a journalist at NPR.
If you have a specific talk in mind outside of the available options, I would be happy to build it from scratch. Some potential ideas: deep dive into audio-storytelling, increasing diversity in science stories, how to best work with journalists, etc.
"Maddie did a fantastic job of covering the basic principles of science communication as well as sharing some of her interesting experiences as a professional journalist and communicator. In addition to being a charming and knowledgeable speaker, she was incredibly flexible, accommodating, and kind in working with us behind the scenes as well"
- Lindsey Tolman, University at Albany
"I really love how it felt like you curated a talk specifically for our groups... Sharing your personal experience and identities made for such a rich seminar and helped our diverse groups connect with you. Our discussion time after your talk was also extremely valuable. It's truly exciting and comforting to see people like you shaping the field of science journalism"
- Daniel Morris, University at Pennsylvania
